program Objective
1. Exposure through Operating Room Shadowing

Students are exposed to half-day shadowing sessions in each of eight surgical specialties (general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, otorhinolaryngology, vascular, urology, pediatric surgery), as well as certain clinics. They were often given the opportunity to scrub in and interact with patients – if allowed by the staff surgeon and appropriate in the circumstances – to ensure maximum exposure. For many students, it represented their very first time scrubbing, or even entering an operating room.

2. Education through Discussions and Q&A

Every day during lunchtime, students engaged with staff and residents from every specialty through a discussion and question & answer session. This allowed students to further their understanding of a surgeon’s lifestyle, responsibilities, practice and career path, on top of offering mentorship, shadowing and research opportunities.

3. Engagement through Hands-on Workshops

Students experienced hands-on simulation workshops in every subspecialty, organized by staff surgeons and residents, to allow them to experience common procedures in a safe learning environment. A list of all workshops is included in the schedule below. For example, the orthopaedic surgery workshop taught students casting and plating techniques, while the general surgery workshop allowed them to experiment for the first time with suturing technique.
